HOUSE OF THE LIGHT WALLS

This is an extremely tiny house. The client required to design a residence composed of spaces which are closed to the vicinity. Moreover windows were revealed to be unnecessary for the house. I was sure that those unique ideas never meant to let go of relationships with the surroundings such as light, wind, and scenery, rather it is considerably essential for architectures to provide ease and joy of life for people involved with them. I had quested for a manipulation in order to develop the concept to a creative structure.
Each opening is designed in minimum form and configuration. Through a synergy with its sectional composition, the openings enable to take natural elements into the house efficiently, and produce richness of the impression of the interior space. A sequence of small openings, distributed on the three-storied walls, serves the wealth of the interior space beautifully. The openings are never exhibited as “windows”, but express their presence as “walls”. Constantly, the walls contain light, and fuse the environment which this house belongs to.

HOUSE IN NIHO

It is a house in the residential area in the southern part of Hiroshima City. Fortunately, the field of vision to the front of the site is widely open, and you can enjoy the calm scenery far and wide. My client demanded an attractive everyday life touching this peaceful view with a minimum architecture, and I had a concrete conviction that it would be achieved enough with one-storied house.
It is extremely simple construction. However, a very enchanting space is involved to it. A courtyard having water at the center of the architecture is the key on a composition of the interior, and its plan, which had been simplified and adopted intentionally a typical layout, contributes to richen the inner space. It leads a complete sight toward not only the indoor scene but also the outdoor one. Furthermore, it causes dramatic effect, a fusion. Scenery and nature taken in with various aspects blend mutually and create subtleties of the expression, which fill daily life with ease and joy. Through the combination of a cantilever slab and a full-scale window, interior of that small house would expand toward the panorama and melt in the scenery.

Spaciousness created from the blindstory

The house is in the front row of a new town located on a hill where you can see a splendid panorama commanding the center of Hiroshima City to off the coast of Miyajima. The shape of the house is like a fan; the size of the house is smaller in the rear but becomes wider toward the front view. The shape uses the advantage of the subdivision where the homesites are allocated alternately before and behind the row, to share the benefits of view, sunlight and airiness with neighbors, and to block neighbors' views from each other. The house receives peaceful natural light and a breeze from east, which are amplified and enhanced to be brought inside. The internal space consists of units in which private rooms fit in and the hull that wraps them. The misalignment of the space axes and big and small voids create various forms of space. The style of the space greatly differs by floor. The first floor without windows protects privacy, blocking the strong light of the setting sun and saving energy, while at the same time, the view is converted into light and shadow, which create subtleties of expression in the space. The second floor with the large windowpane opens widely. The panorama enhances the charm in a wide angle and variegated frame, and gives a more dynamic impression by stark contrast with the first floor. The scene for family get-togethers, the panoramic view and the reflection in the window glass stratify the living space and melt with light and breeze. The panoramic view, livability, community and the architecture acting on them have resulted in the richness of the space and pleasant life. This house is clearly distinct from a mere space with a fine view.                                 ( Ryuichi Furumoto )

Komorebi Clinic

This was a project to construct a new building on the site of a dental clinic that offers medical services to the local residents of a small town in Kyushu, Saga Prefecture. In order to respond to the diversifying needs of patients, the clinic sought to remake itself as a general dental facility that would offer treatment, correction, prevention as well as dental care for infants, so as to contribute to the revitalization of the local community. In a small town such as this one, the clinic also serves as a valuable source of employment, as well as an important place of local interaction. The architecture of the clinic thus had to not only fulfill appropriate requirements regarding safety, functionality and serviceability, but also venture to offer something new to the local community by creating opportunities for social interaction and contact with nature, thus becoming a place of physical and emotional “healing” for both staff and patients.

Tucked between a national highway and a JR train route, the clinic is located on a site that stands on extremely weak, stratified silt soil close to several large factories. Although the client wanted a building with a well-balanced structure erected on stable ground with effective sound insulation and anti-shock fixtures, the project ended up transforming the existing structure into a form that would envelop and contain this soft space: using architecture to extract natural elements from the site, allowing the clinic to attend to its patients promptly and astutely. The overall impression of the clinic is one of well being – as if one were being embraced by the magnanimity of nature, basking in the komorebi (sunshine streaming through the foliage) of the overhanging trees. Gentle light entering through small round openings distributed all over the walls fills the interior, and cross-sections that generously incorporate open atria, large and small openings and skylights facilitate a variety of interactions with other people and the natural environment.
The clinic maintains a sense of openness without feeling fragmented, and the transparency of the treatment area has been enhanced. The client had three requests: 1) that the clinic remains open at the old location until the new building was complete; 2) that there be a direct passageway linking the new clinic to the residential wing; and 3) that the new building be easily recognizable for frequent visitors to the clinic. This resulted in a design that oriented the new building westwards facing the highway. The completed clinic overlooks both the highway and the residential wing, and care was taken to create a situation in which the architecture would open up to the outside. In addition to providing for physical buffers like setbacks and waist-high partitions, a second, psychological buffer layer was created by using various natural elements that exude a sense of vitality, such as swaying leaves, moiré patterns on water surfaces and the sound of flowing water.
